Some clients arrive knowing exactly where they want to live. Others ask me: “Where would you live?” Both are perfectly fine starting points.

Paris has twenty arrondissements and countless pockets within them. Here is how I narrow it down.

First, what matters most to you?

Before opening a single listing, I ask what your week looks like: who goes where, how often, and at what time. This is what turns “somewhere in Paris” into a handful of realistic areas.

If you have children, the school often decides

For public school in Paris, assignment depends on your home address: each address belongs to a sector, and each school has its own. Exceptions exist but are limited (source: paris.fr).

Many of my clients choose a bilingual or international school instead. In that case the sector matters less, and the location of the school becomes the starting point. Choose Paris Region offers a map of schools across the region, according to age and languages.

Either way, we start from the school and the neighbourhood follows.

Sometimes, the budget decides, not you

Prices vary a lot from one area to another, so your budget can narrow the map before your preferences even come into play. I would rather tell you this early, with a clear picture of what your budget can realistically get and where, than let you fall in love with an area that is out of reach. From there, we choose together within what is possible.

If you use public transport, look for a direct metro line

This is my first piece of advice. One direct line to your office is worth more than a flat that looks close on the map but needs changes.

Being close to the office is not always the best idea

Walking to work sounds ideal. But when offices are in a business district such as La Défense, or in certain parts of the 8th arrondissement, I often encourage clients to live elsewhere. In my experience these areas are quieter in the evenings and at weekends, and you may prefer a neighbourhood with more life, as long as a direct line takes you to work.

Very touristy areas are not for everyone

They are beautiful, and they are busy. I always check whether that suits you for daily life, not just for a visit.

Every client is different

Choosing a neighbourhood is part of what I do when I search with you.
